Former Kerala chief minister and opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan has been detained by Delhi Police amid a crackdown on protesters linked to the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), according to a video shared by a Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP.

CPI(M) MP John Brittas confirmed the detention in a video posted on X on Saturday. The footage showed Vijayan and former Kerala finance minister KN Balagopal with Brittas.

Brittas said they had been taken to Chhatrasal Stadium before being driven around the city in a police vehicle. He said they had not been informed of their destination and accused the authorities of curtailing citizens' fundamental freedoms.

The detentions followed protests by the CJP demanding the resignation of then education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over an examination paper leak. Police reportedly acted to prevent a recurrence of the unrest witnessed during a protest on July 20.

Delhi Police stepped up security across the capital ahead of the demonstration. Entry and exit gates at 45 metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk and Kashmere Gate, were reportedly closed.

More than 250 trains scheduled to arrive at Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi railway stations were also cancelled, while over 20,000 police personnel were deployed and 300 CCTV cameras installed to monitor the situation.

Internet services within a 4km radius of Jantar Mantar were suspended for 24 hours from 10pm on Friday, according to the report.

More than 1,000 people had been detained in New Delhi and adjoining areas since Friday evening. Those detained reportedly included three senior CJP organisers, Abhijit Deepke, Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, the party's legal wing chief Ratna Singh, and YouTuber and influencer Dhruv Rathee.
