Indian climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has threatened to launch a hunger strike or march if leaders detained during protests in Delhi are not released by Sunday.
In a video message posted on social media on Saturday (October 10), Wangchuk described the situation in India as an “undeclared emergency,” expressing concern over the detention of opposition leaders during demonstrations demanding the resignation of the country's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), according to Hindustan Times.
Wangchuk said he had called for unity and peace ahead of the protest programme on Friday but had not expected the world's largest democracy to face what he described as an undeclared emergency.
Although he supported the movement against the CEC, Wangchuk could not attend the protest in Delhi in person. He said he had been encouraged by the presence of several leaders to lead the movement but later learned that they had all been arrested.
He expressed hope that the detained leaders would be released soon, warning that he would be compelled to launch a hunger strike or a march if they remained in custody beyond Sunday.
The report said Indian authorities deployed thousands of armed police personnel and suspended metro and rail services in parts of Delhi in an effort to prevent the protests. Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and left-wing student organisations were reportedly detained.
Former chief ministers Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal, Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi, Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala and Manik Sarkar of Tripura were also reportedly detained by Delhi Police after expressing solidarity with the protest.
