National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has expressed solidarity with young protesters in India demanding electoral reforms, the resignation of the chief election commissioner and protection of democratic rights.
In a statement on Saturday night, he said internet shutdowns and arrests of peaceful protesters were direct attacks on fundamental rights.
Nahid recalled Bangladesh’s July 2024 uprising and thanked Indian students, writers and independent voices for supporting the movement. He said South Asia’s future should be based on democracy, religious harmony and social justice, rejecting communal hatred and political intolerance.
He also called for the immediate release of detained leaders, including Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid, and urged an end to border killings and fair sharing of river water.
