US President Donald Trump has condemned a deadly attack on King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh, saying what happened in the kingdom was unacceptable.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Trump said, he would speak with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman following the attack. Asked whether the United States would join Saudi Arabia’s military campaign against the Houthi group, the US president said he would look into the matter.
According to Saudi authorities, at least 12 people, including two Bangladeshis, were killed in the attack on Riyadh’s international airport. At least 309 others were injured.
The Iran-backed Houthi group in Yemen has been blamed for the attack. Senior Houthi official Mohammed al-Bukhaiti claimed responsibility, saying the strike was carried out in response to Saudi attacks in Yemen. He also accused Saudi Arabia of targeting civilian infrastructure in Yemen.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also strongly condemned the attack. In a post on social media platform X on Friday, he said the United States strongly condemned the recent attacks in Saudi Arabia.
Rubio described the attacks as showing utter disregard for the lives of innocent civilians and said they must stop immediately.
He also confirmed that a US citizen was killed in the attack on Riyadh’s international airport.
Meanwhile, UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg condemned the deadly attack on a civilian airport in Saudi Arabia, warning that such strikes could lead to a serious deterioration of the situation.
In a statement, Grundberg said such actions posed a serious threat to regional security, prolonged the cycle of violence and further complicated efforts to achieve peace in Yemen.
Saudi Arabia’s civil aviation authority said it was assessing the extent of the damage caused by the attack. Airport operations have been temporarily suspended as a result.
