The deceased are Mohammad Nasrullah Badarpuri, an Umrah pilgrim from Nangalkot upazila of Cumilla, and Mohammad Sahed Ahmed, a Bangladeshi expatriate worker from Shahjahanpur upazila of Bogura.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh confirmed their identities to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday afternoon, October 11.
Four other Bangladeshis were injured in the incident and are receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) of King Khalid Hospital in Saudi Arabia, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said.
She said efforts were underway to confirm the identities of all those affected. The Bangladesh mission in Riyadh is also contacting other Bangladeshis living in the country and providing guidance to help ensure their safety.
Asked about the repatriation of the deceased, the state minister said the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would jointly provide necessary assistance in coordination with the Saudi authorities.
She said the incident had only recently occurred and the government would work with Saudi Arabia to complete the necessary formalities and bring the bodies home as soon as possible.
The government generally bears the cost of repatriating the bodies of deceased Bangladeshi migrant workers, she added.
