Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has stressed the need to increase egg production to meet domestic demand and build export capacity.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion marking World Egg Day at the conference room of the Cotton Development Board in Dhaka on Tuesday.
This year's theme was “Protein That Powers and Protects”.
Tuku said Bangladesh had exported hatching eggs to Nigeria for the first time this year, describing the development as encouraging.
He said the country could export eggs after meeting domestic demand if producers ensured quality products. He also called for collective efforts to strengthen the economy and develop the poultry sector.
Highlighting food security, the state minister stressed the need to keep poultry feed prices affordable to reduce production costs. He urged stakeholders not to use antibiotics in poultry feed.
Describing eggs as an affordable source of protein, he encouraged people to include one egg in their daily diet, citing its nutritional value.
Tuku also called for greater participation by young entrepreneurs in the poultry sector, saying their involvement could expand economic activities at the grassroots level and strengthen the rural economy.
Emphasising women's economic empowerment, he said former prime minister Khaleda Zia had supported the sector by distributing ducks and chickens in different areas. He also referred to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's initiative in 2001, when he was BNP senior joint secretary general, to distribute ducks, chickens and goats among disadvantaged communities.
The state minister said encouraging rural women to raise poultry at home could help them secure a regular supply of eggs and become financially self-reliant.
He also assured government support for reducing electricity costs at poultry farms, including exploring opportunities to bring them under solar power projects.
Director General of the Department of Livestock Services Md Shahjahan Khan chaired the event.
Special guests included Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council convener Mashiur Rahman and World’s Poultry Science Association-Bangladesh branch senior vice-president Md Sirajul Haque.
Additional Secretary of the Livestock Division at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Syeda Nawara Jahan, Cotton Development Board Executive Director Md Rezaul Amin and Department of Livestock Services Director (Administration) Dr Md Boyzar Rahman were also present, along with other officials.
Earlier, a rally and free egg distribution programme were held to mark the day. The Department of Livestock Services, the World’s Poultry Science Association-Bangladesh branch and the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council jointly organised the programmes.
