Passenger bus services on the Bandarban-Thanchi road resumed on Wednesday (October 14) after a six-day suspension over alleged extortion demands and threats from an armed group.
Bus services had remained suspended since October 8 after transport workers reportedly received threats for refusing to meet the group's demands. The suspension caused inconvenience to local residents and tourists.
The services resumed following meetings with the local administration and security authorities, who assured transport workers of enhanced security.
Mohammad Nurul Alam, general secretary of the Bandarban-Thanchi-Ruma-Rowangchhari Bus Owners' Association, said they agreed to resume services despite security concerns, considering the difficulties faced by passengers and tourists.
He said security personnel would escort buses from the Y Junction to the Nilgiri tourist centre to ensure safer travel.
Bandarban Superintendent of Police Mohammad Wahabul Islam Khandaker said bus services had resumed under the overall security arrangements of the Army, Border Guard Bangladesh and police.
