Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir has urged police personnel on the ground to perform their duties properly without being influenced by rumours, misinformation or conspiracies, warning that deliberate unprofessional conduct will not be tolerated.

“Unintentional mistakes will be excused, but there will be no leniency for those deliberately involved in unprofessional activities,” he said.

In an exclusive interview, the police chief discussed the country's law and order situation, the role of field-level police personnel, action against controversial and absconding officers, and future plans for the force.

Speaking at his office on Tuesday evening, Ali Hossain said action had already been taken against police personnel who had participated in telephone conversations with alleged conspirators. He urged others to learn from those cases.

He also said practices such as collecting money from drug spots and releasing accused persons in exchange for money had been stopped.

Asked about police personnel leaking internal information, the IGP said those found sharing confidential information outside the force would be brought under the law following investigations. The process had already begun, he added.

He said some police personnel who had engaged in partisan activities in the past were now absconding. Appropriate action would also be taken against serving officers found to be in contact with them.

The IGP described the number of police personnel involved in conspiracies as small and said no one involved would be above the law.

He also dismissed rumours that police personnel recruited during the 17 years of the previous regime would lose their jobs. Those spreading such rumours would be identified and face appropriate action, he said.
