CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Oct 16: Special Response Battalion (SRB) has recovered 92 crude bombs and 11.8kg of gunpowder during a raid in a mango orchard in Chapainawabganj, in what an official described as the largest-ever gunpowder seizure in the district.
The explosives were found abandoned in the mango orchard in Purba Tikra village under Maharajpur Union in Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila early Friday, said Tarikul Islam, company commander and senior assistant superintendent of police at SRB-5 in Rajshahi.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from SRB’s CPC-1 unit in Chapainawabganj conducted the raid with support from the battalion’s bomb disposal unit.
The team also recovered two sickles and various materials used to manufacture explosives. “This is the largest haul of gunpowder ever recovered in the district,” Tarikul said.
He said the explosives were suspected to have been stockpiled for use in sabotage in different parts of the country.
