Protests have erupted in France over rising living costs and alleged repression of students, with clashes between police and demonstrators in the capital, Paris.
Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters, who threw fireworks and other objects at officers. Demonstrators were seen attempting to gather in smaller groups across the city.
Many protesters wore masks and hoodies. Riot police were deployed in large numbers at various streets and intersections in Paris to contain the unrest.
French media outlet BFMTV reported that a tourist office in Lyon had been set on fire.
According to the Associated Press (AP), calls to revive the Yellow Vest movement had circulated on social media for several days before protests were called across the country on Saturday.
The Yellow Vest movement spread across France in 2018, driven by public anger over social inequality.
The latest wave of protests began in mid-September, led by students opposing planned education budget cuts and demanding improvements to school conditions.
The CGT, one of France’s largest trade unions, backed Saturday’s demonstrations, calling for higher wages and pensions, lower prices in line with public demands, and improved public services.
Around 100 protesters have been arrested in Paris so far. Nearly 2,000 demonstrators were detained during the protests that began in September.
