Restore Transparency and Fairness to Railway E-Ticketing

Published : Sunday, 18 October, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Buying a train ticket online should be easy. Passengers should be able to log in, choose their seats and pay the official fare without wasting time in long queues. Yet, many people in the country struggle to secure tickets, which often sell out within seconds of sales opening. According to a recent report published in this newspaper, automated software, or “bots”, was allegedly used to grab tickets almost instantly, allowing sellers to offer them later at higher prices on unauthorised websites. Bangladesh Railway has sought an explanation from its service provider, Shohoz-Synesis-Vincen JV. We welcome this move, but the authorities must establish how the system was exploited.

The service provider claims it has introduced measures to detect and prevent unauthorised activity. Meanwhile, railway officials say they have stopped the reported “bot” activity. However, these assurances do not answer the main questions. How did “bots” gain such an advantage over ordinary passengers? Can the authorities prevent the same thing from happening again? The reported appearance of tickets on platforms such as BookMyRail.com at inflated prices also raises concerns about how sellers obtain them. Unless these questions receive clear answers, passengers will have little reason to trust that the problem has been solved.

The issue goes beyond a technical failure. Online ticketing was introduced to reduce queues, curb middlemen and make train travel easier. If passengers have to compete against automated programmes, the system defeats its own purpose. Those who fail to secure tickets may have to change their plans or pay more to illegal sellers. Moreover, the incident raises concerns about supervision and accountability. Judicial officers in Sylhet have initiated suo motu cases, while authorities have recently arrested security personnel over ticket racketeering. These developments make it necessary to examine not only the software but also possible negligence, weak oversight and collusion.

Against this backdrop, the railway authorities must take practical steps to protect passengers. An independent technical audit should identify system weaknesses and assess whether the service provider has met its contractual obligations. Stronger anti-bot measures, effective user verification and closer monitoring of suspicious purchases can help prevent automated ticket grabbing. Law enforcement agencies must also investigate illegal resale networks and prosecute those responsible. The authorities should publish their findings and outline measures to prevent further abuse.

We expect the railway authorities to guarantee every passenger a fair chance to buy a ticket at the official fare without any hassle. The online system must serve its intended purpose: making train travel more accessible and preventing middlemen from exploiting passengers. Neither the service provider nor any responsible official should escape accountability for failures that undermine public trust. Digitalisation can improve railway services only when the system remains secure, transparent and fair to all.
