The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will begin hearing appeals on November 20 against the High Court verdict upholding the death sentences of 20 convicts in the sensational murder case of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad.
Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal informed journalists of the development on Sunday.
On March 16, the High Court upheld the trial court’s verdict sentencing all 20 death-row convicts to death. It also upheld life imprisonment for five other convicts in the case.
The verdict was delivered by a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain.
The judgment on the appeals and death references began to be delivered at 11am, with senior Justice AKM Asaduzzaman reading out the verdict.
Hearings on the appeals filed by the death-row convicts and the death references in the case began on February 10 and concluded on February 24.
In October last year, then Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman took an initiative to expedite the hearing of the appeals and death references in the widely discussed murder case.
Abrar, a second-year student of BUET’s electrical and electronic engineering department, was beaten to death by a group of students at a university dormitory in October 2019. The killing sparked widespread protests across the country and renewed calls for action against campus violence.
