Police have recovered petrol bomb-like objects from the shrine of Baul mystic Fakir Lalon Shah in Kushtia and later defused them, triggering panic among devotees and visitors in the area.

The objects were found in a white bag near the shrine’s main gate on Sunday midnight, according to police.

Members of Special Response Unit (SRU)subsequently defused the objects.

Police said a local Baul devotee spotted the petrol bombs, wrapped in a white confectionery bag, beneath a coconut tree beside the main gate at around midnight and alerted law enforcement.

The police later called in the SRU bomb disposal team to handle the suspicious objects.

The discovery sparked fear among thousands of Baul devotees and followers who visit the shrine and its surrounding areas. Security has since been tightened at the shrine and nearby locations.

Kumarkhali Police Station Jamal Uddin OC said security measures had been strengthened following the incident.

Police are investigating who placed the objects at the site and why, he added.
