Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho expressed confusion over the controversy surrounding Arda Guler’s alleged elbow strike during their 4-1 victory against Sevilla.
The Turkish midfielder scored the opening goal for Madrid shortly after escaping a potential red card for an off-the-ball incident. Sevilla coach Luis Garcia voiced anger over the decision, claiming his side was denied an advantage.
The incident occurred in the 22nd minute with the score tied at 0-0, when Guler allegedly elbowed Sevilla's Peque Fernandez. Guler put Madrid ahead soon after, leaving Garcia frustrated that Madrid was not reduced to 10 men.
Mourinho suggested his opposing coach was focusing on the controversy to deflect from Sevilla’s heavy defeat. "Nobody could show me what they claim happened. There are no images," Mourinho said. "I asked for TV footage and tactical camera angles, but I saw nothing that justifies the anger."
He added that he would admit the error if clear proof emerged. "If someone brings clear footage before next Saturday, I will address it. But until then, there is nothing to discuss," he stated.
Garcia maintained that the referee made a critical mistake. "We should have played against 10 men from the 25th minute. Peque told me at half-time that he was hit. It was a clear red card," Garcia insisted.
Mourinho dismissed the claims, noting he checked video footage immediately during the match. "I understand Luis's reaction after a 4-1 loss," Mourinho said. "I asked my assistant Pedro to show me the clip, but we found nothing."
Addressing reporters, the Portuguese manager questioned the media focus. "Did any of you see it clearly? That is why I do not understand the excessive questioning about this," he concluded.
