The situation in Sajek has been brought under control following nearly two hours of intermittent gunfight between security forces and an armed group, which left six security personnel injured, Rangamati Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Abdur Raqib confirmed.
Speaking at a press conference at his office at 3:00 PM on Thursday (October 22), the SP stated that law enforcement agencies have secured the area and all stranded tourists have departed safely.
Earlier at around 8:30 AM, approximately 3,000 tourists left Sajek for Khagrachhari under special security escort provided by law enforcement agencies. However, as the convoy reached the Ujobazar area, it was halted by blockaders. When security personnel attempted to clear the road barricades to allow the vehicles to pass, clashes broke out, leading to an exchange of fire between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
The SP explained that blockaders took up positions at Ujobazar, preventing stranded tourists from leaving Sajek. When law enforcement officers requested them to clear the road to ensure safe passage for the tourists, the blockaders hurled bricks and stones at the personnel, injuring six members of the Army and Police.
He added that at one stage, members of the armed group opened fire on the security forces. In response, law enforcement personnel returned fire to manage the situation. Intermittent firing continued until 1:00 PM before peace was restored.
"The situation is currently calm. Ujobazar is under the control of law enforcement forces, and all tourists have left Sajek safely," said SP Abdur Raqib, adding that legal action will be taken against those involved following a thorough investigation.
