Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the immediate closure of Hebron and a full lockdown of the occupied West Bank following a shooting that wounded five Israelis on Friday (October 23).
Netanyahu announced the measures after a security assessment with senior military and intelligence officials, saying security forces would prepare to shut down the entire West Bank later in the day. He also ordered an immediate cordon around Hebron, according to Al Jazeera.
The shooting took place near the Yehuda Junction, close to Hebron, where two Palestinians allegedly opened fire. Israeli troops later shot and killed the two men, while emergency responders said five people had been wounded, including two in critical condition.
The Israeli military said the two men arrived by car and opened fire before fleeing the scene. Security forces cordoned off the area and continued searches for possible suspects. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the shooting.
Netanyahu also said Israeli forces were intensifying operations and carrying out arrests in the area. The measures come days before Israel's parliamentary election, scheduled for Tuesday (October 27), amid heightened security across the occupied territory.
