The Jamuna Fertiliser Company Limited (JFCL) in Sarishabari of Jamalpur resumed urea fertiliser production on Friday after a 14-day shutdown caused by a mechanical fault.
Production restarted at 10:00 AM on Friday (October 23) after repairs were completed.
The resumption has brought relief to factory officials, employees, local traders and farmers.
According to factory sources, production had remained suspended since January 15 due to a gas shortage. After an eight-month shutdown, Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited resumed gas supply to the factory on September 20.
However, production could not restart immediately because the gas pressure was insufficient. Production resumed on the night of October 7 after the pressure increased, but operations were suspended again on October 9 following a boiler leak.
Factory engineers and technicians then worked for two weeks to repair the mechanical fault in the boiler. Production resumed on Friday after the fault was fixed and adequate gas pressure became available.
Mohammad Fazlul Haque, deputy chief engineer (chemistry) of JFCL, said engineers worked continuously and fully repaired the boiler fault two days earlier. Urea production restarted at 10AM on Friday after the factory received the required gas pressure.
Established in 1990, the factory began commercial production in 1991. With a daily production capacity of 1,700 tonnes of urea, it supplies fertiliser to 21 districts, including Jamalpur, Sherpur, Mymensingh, Tangail and Rajbari.
The resumption of production is expected to help maintain urea fertiliser supplies in the districts concerned and meet farmers' demand.
