TANGAIL, Oct 23: The Tangail District chapter of Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA), a road safety organisation, observed National Road Safety Day on Thursday with a series of awareness programmes under the slogans “Let the Roads Be a Path to Peace, Not Death” and “A Commitment of Students and the Public: Safe Roads for All.”

The programmes included an evening discussion on the Tangail Central Shaheed Minar premises, attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) and Additional District Magistrate Md Ariful Islam Prince, who represented the deputy commissioner as the chief guest.

NISCHA District President Firoz Ahmed Bachchu chaired the event, with opening remarks by the organisation’s District General Secretary (GS) Md Selim Tarafdar. Executive Committee Member SM Shafiqul Alam Siddiqui also spoke.

Special guests included Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md Robiul Islam, District BNP President Hasanuzzamil Shaheen, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Assistant Director (Engineering) Sheikh Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, District Bus-Coach Owners’ Association Convener Shafikur Rahman Shafik, and District JASAS GS Masudur Rahman Tuhin.

Speakers stressed that restoring discipline on the roads requires greater awareness and responsibility among drivers, passengers and pedestrians. They urged the public to remember the message: “One road accident can bring a lifetime of sorrow.”

NISCHA’s day-long activities included distributing road safety leaflets to the public and conducting awareness campaigns for transport workers, followed by the discussion meeting.

The programme concluded with a special prayer for the forgiveness of the souls of those killed in road crashes, including Jahanara Kanchan, the late wife of NISCHA founder and film actor Ilias Kanchan, and a cultural performance.
