A sub-inspector and a female constable of Nabiganj Police Station were withdrawn from duty and attached to the district police lines on Saturday (October 24) following the viral spread of a video showing a detained Chhatra League leader chanting political slogans inside police lockup.
The withdrawn personnel were identified as duty officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Mehdi and female Constable Afsana Mimi.
Nabiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abul Hossain confirmed the administrative action on Saturday afternoon.
Police sources stated that officers arrested Shah Tapu, a suspected accused in a Anti-Terrorism Act case and local leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), during a raid at Umarpur village in Aushkandi union on Friday (October 23) afternoon.
While Tapu was in police lockup, a co-villager identified as Shah Juwel approached the cell to offer him water and covertly recorded a video using a mobile phone. In the footage, which circulated widely on social media on Friday, Tapu was seen chanting "Joy Bangla" and "Joy Bangabandhu" slogans.
The incident sparked severe public criticism regarding security lapses and how a civilian was permitted to bring a recording device into a restricted police detention zone.
Police subsequently launched a drive and arrested Shah Juwel for filming and distributing the footage, showing him arrested under the same Anti-Terrorism Act case.
OC Abul Hossain added that an internal investigation is currently underway to examine all aspects of the security breach.
