A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the authorities’ failure to act on a request for legal action against lawyers who hold practising certificates but engage in other jobs or businesses.
Lawyer Farhad Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, who filed the petition, confirmed the matter on Monday, October 26.
He said the petition could be heard by a High Court bench comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice SM Iftekhar Uddin Mahmood.
On January 30, 2023, Bhuiyan submitted an application to the Bangladesh Bar Council seeking action against lawyers allegedly involved in other professions while retaining their licences to practise law.
In the application, he said some lawyers were engaged in businesses, private and public sector jobs, contracting, transport, real estate-related activities and other commercial ventures without surrendering their practising certificates.
He also alleged that some lawyers worked full-time or part-time at banks, insurance companies, pharmaceutical businesses and mobile phone service providers while retaining their licences.
The application argued that such activities violated Bar Council laws and rules and undermined the dignity of the legal profession. It called on the authorities to take appropriate action against those concerned.
After receiving no response to the application, Bhuiyan sent a legal notice on August 12. He subsequently filed the writ petition after receiving no reply to the notice.
