Jordan launched airstrikes in Syria on Monday following a deadly gun attack on a church in Jordan that killed nine people and injured dozens last week.
At least seven people were killed in Monday’s strikes, according to initial reports. The victims reportedly included a woman and several children.
Jordan’s military said the operation targeted hideouts of armed groups in southeastern Syria allegedly linked to the church attackers.
In a statement, the Jordanian military said several members of the groups were killed or injured and a number of their vehicles were destroyed. However, it did not identify the groups or specify the exact locations targeted.
Jordan said the operation was conducted in coordination with the Syrian government, but Damascus denied the claim.
Syria’s Defence Ministry said in a statement posted on Telegram that a Jordanian strike killed five members of the same family, including three children, a woman and a man.
Two other strikes reportedly killed two elderly men aged 60 and 80 in Syria’s southern provinces of Daraa and Sweida.
The Syrian government has launched an investigation into the attacks and stressed the importance of joint field operations and security coordination in border areas.
Following the strikes, Syrian border authorities announced the closure of the Nasib border crossing with Jordan, suspending traffic in both directions.
