Ex-Assistant tax commissioner gets 5 years in jail for illicit wealth

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced retired Assistant Tax Commissioner Shyamal Krishna Das to five years in prison in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over the acquisition of wealth beyond his known sources of income.

Judge Abdus Salam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-9 also fined him Tk 10 lakh, with an additional year in prison in default of payment. The court ordered the confiscation of Tk 1.36 crore in illegally acquired wealth in favour of the state.

ACC prosecutor Khandaker Shamim Hossain confirmed the verdict.

Das, who had been on bail, appeared before the court for the verdict. Following the judgment, his bail was cancelled and he was sent to jail under a conviction warrant.

The ACC filed the case on May 23, 2024, alleging that Das had acquired Tk 1.85 crore in assets beyond his known sources of income while working in the National Board of Revenue’s Mymensingh tax zone.

According to the case statement, Das declared assets worth Tk 2.73 crore in a wealth statement submitted to the ACC on February 8, 2021. Including family expenses of Tk 31.13 lakh, his total assets and expenditure stood at Tk 3.04 crore, against an identified legitimate income of Tk 1.19 crore.

After investigation, ACC Assistant Director Hafizur Rahman submitted a charge sheet against Das on April 17, 2025. The court framed charges on February 18 and recorded testimony from four witnesses during the trial.
