Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman has condemned the assault on the director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), calling it an act of audacity and criminality.
In a Facebook post on his verified account on Wednesday afternoon, he alleged that members of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), an organisation of pro-BNP physicians, had carried out the incident by creating a mob.
“If such mobs can be formed recklessly in broad daylight even among a highly educated professional community, one can imagine where the country is heading,” he said.
Shafiqur Rahman said the incident followed the recent vandalism and looting at Radda Medical Centre, adding that the latest incident had marked a dark chapter in Bangladesh’s medical history.
He called for a proper investigation and justice, warning that the country’s fragile healthcare system could not recover without accountability.
