508 Russian nuclear exprts to come to Iran: Rosatom CEO

The Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation, Rosatom, has rejected plans to evacuate Russian personnel from Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, announcing instead an ambitious expansion strategy to increase operational capacity and significantly bolster its workforce on-site.

Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, confirmed on Wednesday (October 28) that the corporation intends to expand the staff at the Bushehr facility to 700 personnel, defying speculation regarding a potential withdrawal of foreign experts.

The announcement coincided with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s arrival in Moscow to attend the Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit, where he held high-level discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin to strengthen bilateral energy cooperation.

Building on earlier talks held on the sidelines of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit, Rosatom has been evaluating multiple new locations across Iran to construct both large- and small-scale nuclear power stations.

An agreement has now been finalized designating sites for several new power units, laying the groundwork for a major expansion at Bushehr.

Under the new plan, over 500 additional Russian specialists will join the 192 experts currently handling construction and operational services at the Bushehr plant, significantly expanding Moscow’s footprint in Iran’s civil nuclear sector.
