International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam has called the verdict against four Awami League leaders, including Mahbubul Alam Hanif, in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in Kushtia during the July uprising “timely.”
He made the remarks on Thursday (October 29), following the verdict.
“We welcome this timely verdict, paying tribute to the souls of the July martyrs,” he said.
Aminul Islam said Hanif helped direct the use of lethal weapons and indiscriminate firing to suppress the student-public movement. He also allegedly instructed party activists to use force at a Kushtia district Awami League meeting.
Six people were killed in indiscriminate firing in Kushtia on August 5, 2024, he said, adding that the charges were proven beyond reasonable doubt.
Hanif was sentenced to death on the first charge and life imprisonment on the other two. The other three accused were sentenced to imprisonment for the remainder of their lives.
The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of half of the accused's movable and immovable property.
