Three oil tankers caught fire after reportedly striking mines while travelling through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, Iranian state media reported.

The IRGC Navy said the vessels were using an unauthorised southern route through the strait. After the fires broke out, the tankers were reportedly abandoned along the southern coast of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the IRGC Navy claimed the vessels had switched off their radar and navigation systems and ignored warnings as they attempted to leave the unauthorised route.

The Iranian force also claimed the fires had caused environmental damage by polluting the unauthorised shipping route. It blamed the vessels’ owners and crews for using the route.

The IRGC Navy also warned shipping companies against relying on statements or claims made in the cyber domain by the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), threatening a strong response to any “provocative action”.

The names of the three vessels, their flag states and whether there were any casualties were not immediately known. Further details about the fires were also unavailable.
