A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to a teenager accused in the death of construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim, who was run over by a car while resting on a footpath in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone.
Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 passed the order on October 29.
The court had earlier rejected the teenager’s bail petitions on September 24 and October 4, ordering his detention at a juvenile development centre.
The defence claimed the teenager was sitting in the front passenger seat and that the incident was accidental. It also said his family had paid Tk 9 lakh in compensation to the victim’s family through a local settlement.
However, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Arifeen Islam of Gulshan Police Station, told the court that CCTV footage showed the teenager getting out through the driver’s door immediately after the incident.
Mehedi’s elder brother, Moktadir Islam, filed a case under the Road Transport Act on September 23, accusing the car’s driver, Akash Mark(44) of causing the death through reckless driving.
