Dear Sir,
As winter approaches, travel to Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram and other south-eastern districts becomes more popular. However, nighttime robberies on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway are raising concerns among travellers.
Recently, a video allegedly showing a robbery near Madhaiya Bazar in Cumilla circulated on social media, causing anxiety among ordinary people. This is unacceptable on a highway that serves as a vital artery for tourism and the national economy, carrying tourists, businesspeople and freight vehicles every day.
Poor lighting and traffic congestion can leave travellers vulnerable to criminals. Moreover, insecurity on this route may discourage tourists from visiting the region, ultimately affecting the south-eastern tourism sector.
The authorities must act before the peak travel season begins. Highway police patrols should increase at vulnerable points, including Madhaiya Bazar. Adequate streetlights and CCTV cameras must be installed along risky stretches. Nighttime monitoring and an emergency helpline should also remain operational throughout the season. A safe highway is essential for tourism and public confidence.
