Indian police have rescued six Bangladeshi women who were trafficked to India under the lure of lucrative jobs and subsequently sold into prostitution at a red-light district in Pune, Maharashtra.
Acting on a tip-off, Pune City Police raided multiple brothels in the Budhwar Peth area early Wednesday (October 28) morning, successfully extracting the victims and lodging cases against four members of a human trafficking syndicate.
Preliminary interrogations revealed that the women were illegally brought across the border from Bangladesh nearly four months ago with promises of well-paying employment, only to be sold to brothel managers upon arrival.
A police official stated that none of the rescued women possessed valid passports or identification documents, adding that two suspects have been arrested while efforts remain ongoing to trace two others involved in the racket.
Budhwar Peth has long been identified as a major hub for human trafficking networks, where Pune police previously rescued four Bangladeshi women from a brothel in a similar operation in March this year.
