A Dhaka court on Monday (November 2) ordered former Member of Parliament for Shariatpur-1 and organizational secretary of the banned Awami League, BM Mozammel Haque, to be shown arrested in a case over the attempted murder of Md. Shamim Mia during the July uprising in the capital's Bhatara area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order in the afternoon following a hearing on an application submitted by the investigating officer.

Advocate Liton Mia, representing the defense, confirmed the development. Sub-Inspector (SI) Habibur Rahman of Bhatara Police Station, the investigating officer of the case, had filed the petition to show Mozammel arrested on October 27.

BM Mozammel Haque was produced before the court from jail for the hearing on Monday. State counsel Harun Or Rashid argued in favor of the arrest petition, while defense lawyers opposed showing him arrested. Upon hearing both sides, the magistrate approved the investigating officer's plea.

According to the case statement, the complainant, Md. Shamim Mia, participated in the mass uprising along the 100-Feet Road under Bhatara Police Station on July 19, 2024. During the demonstration, Shamim sustained four gunshot wounds to various parts of his body.

Following medical treatment, Shamim filed an attempted murder case naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina among several others as accused. BM Mozammel Haque, an accused listed in the initial First Information Report (FIR), was formally shown arrested under that lawsuit.
