Jail Killing Day is being observed across Bangladesh on Tuesday, November 3, commemorating the killing of four national leaders inside Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975.
The four leaders — Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, Captain M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman — were assassinated while in detention during the political turmoil following the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
On the night of November 3, 1975, the four leaders were shot and stabbed with bayonets inside the prison, where they had been held in custody.
The killings are regarded as a significant episode in Bangladesh’s post-independence political history. The four leaders had played key roles in the country’s Liberation War and the formation of the wartime government in 1971.
The incident took place during the government of Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad, following the August 15 assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The political circumstances surrounding the killings and accountability for the incident remain significant subjects in Bangladesh’s historical and political discourse.
