A legal notice has been sent to National Citizen Party (NCP) Senior Joint Convener Nasiruddin Patwary over his remarks about Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, which the notice described as false, fabricated and defamatory.
Supreme Court lawyer Md Yasin Arafat (Samrat) sent the notice on Tuesday (November 3) on behalf of Advocate Mahmudur Rahman Mission Bhuiyan, assistant office secretary in charge of Lakshmipur district and joint convener of the municipal unit of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal.
The notice asked Patwary to withdraw the remarks and issue a public, unconditional apology within 15 days of receiving it. Otherwise, legal action would be taken against him in court.
According to the notice, Patwary made the remarks about Annie at a public meeting in Dhaka recently. He reportedly said: “There is this group of terrorists... Annie Chowdhury receives no phone calls at the place where they send me money.”
The notice issuer alleged that the statement was entirely baseless and politically motivated. The remarks were broadcast by a private television channel, online news outlets and social media on October 30, allegedly damaging the personal dignity and social reputation of Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, the lawmaker for Lakshmipur-3 (Sadar).
The notice further stated that such remarks could constitute defamation under Sections 499 and 500 of the Penal Code, 1860.
It reiterated that legal proceedings would be initiated before the competent court if Patwary failed to withdraw the statement and issue an unconditional apology within the stipulated 15-day period.
