A group of journalists in Chittagong organized a protest program outside the Chittagong Press Club on Saturday (7 November), calling for a boycott of film actress Pori Moni and hurling shoes at her photograph in response to her alleged mistreatment of a reporter.
The demonstration was staged to protest the harassment and insulting behavior directed at Robiul Hossain Raju, a multimedia reporter for the daily Samakal. Journalists alongside individuals from various professions participated in the program.
Addressing the gathering, speakers emphasized that the duty of journalists is to present truthful and objective information to the public. They asserted that any hindrance to independent news gathering directly deprives citizens of accurate information.
"Insulting a journalist is not merely an disrespect to an individual; it is an attack on media freedom and the public's right to know," speakers noted during the protest.
The demonstrators further declared that celebrity status does not place anyone above the law and urged media workers across the country to stand united in protest against such conduct. Speakers also appealed to the public to voice their opposition and called on relevant authorities to take appropriate action regarding the incident.
The Journalist Development Council also formally issued a condemnation of Pori Moni's actions during the event, after which participants hurled shoes at the actress's poster to signal their protest.
The protest follows an incident on 5 November at the Dhaka Court premises after Pori Moni secured bail in a case. Accompanied by ten personal security guards, the actress attended the court hearing and was granted bail on a bond of Tk 500.
While heading to her vehicle after the proceedings, Pori Moni alleged that someone in the crowd had inappropriately touched her. She subsequently confronted reporter Robiul Hossain Raju.
Video footage of the incident showed that Raju was gathering news from a distance and that one of Pori Moni's bodyguards had pushed against her. Despite this, the actress snatched Raju's mobile phone and subjected him to verbal abuse and misconduct before eventually returning the device.
