Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury has been appointed as Bangladesh's 29th foreign secretary, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.
The ministry's Administration Wing said he would serve as foreign secretary until further orders. The appointment will take effect immediately in the public interest.
Chowdhury replaces Asad Alam Siam, who has been serving as foreign secretary since June 20, 2025. Siam is set to take up the post of Bangladesh's high commissioner to India.
A 17th-batch officer of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs) cadre, Chowdhury previously served as Bangladesh's permanent representative to the United Nations. Before that, he was the country's ambassador to Nepal.
He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1998 and has held various diplomatic positions at Bangladesh missions in New Delhi, Islamabad and New York, as well as at the country's Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
