Rajshahi: Four state-run power plants in Rajshahi division remain closed due to gas scarcity.

Pashchimanchal Gas Company Limited (PGCL), the authority to gas distribution and marketing in the division, has asked to shut down the stations citing gas shortage.

Despite the shortage, three private-owned plants are still operating.

Of the closed power stations, one with 100 MW capacity and 71 MW one in Baghabari, run by the PDB, and another two with 225 units each in Sayedabad of Sirajganj district.

Sources in the PGCL said the amount of daily gas production in the country is around 270 crore cubic feet. Of which, around 12 crore cubic feet is daily allotment for PGCL.

The demand came down to 3.2 crore cubic feet due to the closure of the power stations.

On November 11, the PGCL authorities verbally asked Sayedabad-1 to keep the plant close because of gas scarcity.

The Baghabari plant of 100 MW capacity was shut down in 2016 for technical glitch. But, gas supply has not been restored yet although the plant was repaired in July this yea.

The 71-MW Baghabari plant suspended production on July 23  due to the same reason.
