BRRI develops two new rice varieties

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has developed two new high yielding rice varieties. One of them is BRRI dhan88 and the other one is BRRI dhan89, those are suitable for cultivation in Boro season. National Seed Board (NSB) gave approval for cultivation of the grain as BRRI dhan88 and BRRI dhan89 on Tuesday.  Acting secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Md Nasiruzzaman presided over the NSB meeting while BRRI director general Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir and other senior officials of different organizations were present here.
 The average yield of the newly released BRRI dhan88 is 7 tons per hectare which is o.5 ton higher than BRRI dhan28. Its life cycle is similar to BRRI dhan 28. Pest and disease infestation in BRRI dhan88 is comparatively lesser than the other conventional varieties. The average yield of the BRRI dhan89 is within eight to nine ton per hectare, which is one ton higher than BRRI dhan29. Its life cycle is 154-158 days.
