Diplomatic efforts in int’l arena to solve Rohingya crisis stressed

Published : Friday, 16 November, 2018 at 12:00 AM
Former diplomats on Thursday said Bangladesh should continue its diplomatic effort in international arena over Rohingya issues to keep pressure on Myanmar to ensure safe return of forcibly displaced people of Rakhine.
They also said China, Russia and India are the key players who can play a role of 'change maker'. Bangladesh should engage those three countries to make a doable plan for the safe return of Rohingyas in future.
"China, Russia and India have a great influence on Myanmar and so in our future plan we need more engagement and involvement with these three countries to solve the mammoth humanitarian issue, "former diplomat Muhammad Jamir told the Daily Observer on Thursday.
Bangladesh correctly chose the negotiation path but it is the responsibility of Myanmar to create an environment there so that Rohingya people can get a feeling that they are returning to their homeland, not to any camp but they (Myanmar) have failed, he says.
Quoting the US Vice President Mike Pence and Myanmar's civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi's  Wednesday meeting in Singapore, Jamir said, Mike Pence told Suu Kyi that the treatment of her country's stateless Rohingya Muslim population was inexcusable, which is the exact comment on the issue.
"Violence and persecution by military and vigilantes which resulted in driving 900,000 Rohingya into Bangladesh is without excuse," the former diplomat said.
Jamir said the US minister told Suu Kyi, "I'm anxious to hear about the progress you're making in holding those accountable who are responsible." So we could say that the international community is aware of the situation.
"We should engage them more into the matter."
Terming the UNHCR's role in the last one week, Muhammad Jamir said, "UNHCR's role has created anxiety there."
Former Ambassador Humayun Kabir on the issue said, "It is a small hiccup for us that can be overcome through engaging the UN bodies in the repatriation process to ensure the safe return of Rohingyas to their homeland.
"I don't see any failure here in our diplomacy in the Rohingya repartition process." It's a position of a destitute. Rohingya people are not feeling that they can get a normal life there. They just said they were not ready to go.
"So we need to give our focus on Myanmar government's activities: what steps they are taking in Rakhine to bring back normal life of Rohingyas," Kabir said.
