Bean adds new dimension to Subarnachar economy

NOAKHALI, Dec 30: Subarnchar Upazila of the district is famous as the crop store of the district. Besides watermelon and soya bean, bean has been added to the crop store of the district. Bean is being extensively cultivated in the upazila. Anybody can find bean trees on raised platforms beside ponds and canals, and even beside dams and pucca roads. Though the farmers were worried as some bean flowers dropped due to rain at the start of the current season, there was good yield of bean this time. The farmers are harvesting bean and bringing those to local markets. They are also getting fair price of the product. Chief Officer of District Agriculture Department Dr Abul Hossen said, "Bean was cultivated on several thousand hectares of land in Subarnachar Upazila. We hope to get 25 to 30 tonnes of bean per hectare."

A survey of the Agriculture Department said, over 3,000 farmers cultivate bean in Subarnachar Upazila. Of that, the highest bean is produced at Soleman Bazaar area. Besides, many people cultivate bean on their homesteads, which is beyond the survey. While visiting Thanar Haat, Bhuiyar Haat, Akhter Miar Haat, Abdullah Miar Haat, and Samir Haat, it was found that wholesalers are buying bean from the local farmers and loading the product to take it to different destinations.

Farmer Selim Majhi of Soleman Bazaar said, "We are making much profit cultivating bean. It takes three months to earn the profit from bean cultivation. After meeting all costs, I have earned profit worth Taka 25,000 to 26,000 from two acres of land." The farmers, however, said many bean flowers fell due to rain at the start of the current season. Besides, black spots have been detected on the bean. Once, Belal Majhi, 42, used to cultivate paddy. Now, he maintains his family well cultivating bean. The soil of Subarnachar is very suitable for bean farming. Farmer Shahed Mia of Thanar Haat said, "I sowed bean seeds on two acres of land at the start of the Bengali month Agrahayan. It takes 35 to 40 days for bean to become mature. I sold bean worth about Taka 1,400 to 1,500."

Omar Faruk Mia of Kaladur area said, "We saw that bean was cultivated on homesteads. But, due to an increase in demand, bean is now cultivated everywhere." He also said with the increase of bean farming, its diseases are also increasing. Owner of Swandip Store Kausar, who sells seeds and fertilisers, said the market is awash with low quality and fake medicines. Besides, the farmers don't know the correct dose of medicine. Owner of Sabji Ghar at Thanar Haat Anwar Master said, the local bean has different colour and taste. It has great demand across the country.

District Agriculture Officer Dr Abul Hossen said the local soil is suitable for bean farming. But, the bean is losing quality for use extra pesticides in the fields. The department is giving advice to the farmers on correct cultivation of the vegetable.
