Students of Rajshahi University (RU) on Thursday blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway to press home for their eight-point demand including construction of footover bridges at three varsity gates.
Protesting the killing of Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, 20, a first-year
student of international relations at Bangladesh University of
Professionals (BUO), they put up barricade in front of the university's main gate at 10:30 am.
At the time, they chanted different slogans like 'We want safe road', and 'we want justice'.
A huge talback of vehicles was cretaed on both sides of the highway due to the protest.
The protesting students, later, left the highway following the RU Proctor's assurance.
Earlier, at 10am, students brought out a procession in front of the central librarty on the university.
The protesters were demanding capital punishment to the driver responsible for Abrar's death, cancellation of registration of Jabal-e-Noor and Supravat buses, and construction of footover bridges in front of the Kajla, Binodpur and main gates of the campus and installation of CC camera beside the zebra crossings.
The demonstrators also gave the university administration seven days' ultimatum to meet their demands.
They threatened to wage a tougher movement if their demand is not met.
Expressing solidarity with the safe road movement, Proctor Professor Lutfar Rahman said students demanded three over bridge under Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC). University administration will appeal to RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton to construct overbridge in these three gates.
