The sensational murder case of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of former SP Babul Akter, has remained in deep fridge for three years since her assassination by hired goons in the port city of Chattogram. Police is said to have wrapped up the investigation but failed to submit charge sheet of the case.
The officials of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) told the Daily Observer that police informer Musa Sikdar, who was directly involved in the killing of Mitu, cannot now be traced, police sources said.
An official of the Investigation team said, "The investigation into Mitu murder reached its final stage one year ago but the team failed to submit the report for mysterious reasons."
Mitu, the wife of former superintendent of police (SP) Babul Akter, was murdered in broad day light on June 5 in 2016.
Kamrul Islam Musa alias Musa Sikdar, who was an informer of Babul, led the mission to stab and shoot her dead.
After the killing, Babul sued three unidentified men. And so far, detectives have arrested five persons including Musa's elder brother Saidul Sikder Shakur. The rest are Motaleb Mia Wasim, Anwar Hossain, Ehteshamul Haque alias Bhola, and Md Shahjahan. The police arrested 'arms supplier' Ehteshamul Haque Bhola and his assistant Md Monir with a pistol.
Wasim and Anwar have given confessional statements before a magistrate, implicating seven persons, including Musa, who directly took part in the killing.
The police arrested Musa's elder brother Saidul Shikder Shakur and Shahjahan for providing the motorbike used in the killing.
Of the accused, Nurul Islam Rashed and Nur Nabi, whose names were mentioned in the confessional statements, were killed in "gunfights" with police in July 2016 in Chittagong, while Musa and another accused, Kalu, are still "on the run". CMP issued a red alert for the two with a bounty of Tk 5 lakh on Musa on June 29 in 2016.
Although police said Musa is on the run, his wife Panna Akhter claimed that plainclothes police detained him and his brother Saku in Bandar area on June 22 in 2016, but later only Saku was shown arrested in the case. Police brushed aside the allegation.
On June 25 last year, Babul Akter was picked up and interrogated in police custody for 15 hours. He was later relieved of his job on September 6 in 2016. Babul now works at a private company.
On the other hand, Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain said that he would not accept it if Babul is dropped from the charge sheet. "There is no scope to drop Babul Akter from the charge sheet. Babul lost his job and he could not rejoin as he is an accused," said Mitu's father.
On December 27 in 2016, Babul Akter, in face of interrogation by the investigators, reportedly confessed that Kamrul Islam Musa alias Musa Sikdar acted as his informant.
Soon after the grisly murder, investigators have said militants might have settled a score against Babul as Babul conducted several successful anti-terrorism drives.
Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain accused Babul for the murder. 'He (Babul) should be implicated in the murder case... if he's not, we'll go to the court.' The police, however, said that the charge sheet was prepared with Musa being one of the accused.
