False Facebook posts killed 5 persons so far

False rumors through Facebook posts led to incidents of attacks killing five people and injuring several hundred others over the last seven years.
Many temples and hundreds of homes have been looted, vandalized and set on fire over those alleged Facebook posts purported to be insults to Islam.
After investigations those Facebook posts were found to have been photoshopped.
"A certain group seems to be intentionally trying to create social unrest in a planned manner," police said.
At least four people were killed and more than a hundred others injured on Sunday as religious zealots clashed with police in Bhola's Borhanuddin Upazila over a hate conversation.
After hacking Biplob's Facebook account, the hacker spread a hate speech among the locals in Borhanuddin Upazila of Bhola.
The Facebook authorities have already identified the hacker who used the Facebook ID of Biplob Chandra Baidya.
Police said the hacker will soon be arrested and then his identity will be disclosed. The police are working on unraveling the mystery behind the incident.
In the past, rumors through Facebook posts led to incidents of attacks on minority communities. Such attacks took place in Ramu of Cox's Bazar in 2012, Ataikula in Pabna in 2013, Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria in 2016 and Horkoli Thakurpara in Rangpur in 2017.
Three dozen cases were filed in connection with the incidents, but trial of none of those has been completed
A high official of police HQ told the Daily Observer on Friday that a vested quarter is trying to create anarchy and social instability by spreading rumors over religious issues on the social platform Facebook
A mob torched and vandalized a village of Buddhists in Cox's Bazaar's Ramu Upazila early on Sunday in one of the worst religious attacks in Bangladesh apparently triggered by a Facebook posting allegedly defaming the Quran in  2012
Several Facebook users, meanwhile, said Uttam Barua, the Ramu youth being accused of Quran defamation, did not post the photo deemed to be offensive to Islam. They said Uttam was tagged to the photo from a Facebook ID called 'Insult Allah' and so he was in no way responsible.
At least 20 houses and shops run by local Hindus were vandalized in the Bangram Bazar area of Ataikula Upazila, Pabna, in 2013.
The incident stemmed from a rumor that Rajib Saha made a post on Facebook which
demeaned the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh).
Fifteen temples and more than a hundred Hindu homes in Nasirnagar were looted and vandalized over an alleged Facebook post in Nasirnagar of Brahmanbaria in 2016.
The violence was triggered by a Facebook post purportedly from the account of one Rasraj Das for 'hurting religious sentiments of Muslims'.
Rasraj, a fisherman, was freed on bail several months ago as police found evidence that someone else, not him, posted the 'anti-Islam' content through either hacking or faking his Facebook account.
All the attacks raised a storm of criticism against the authorities; the police were widely accused of doing nothing to prevent the attacks on minority Hindus.
A man was killed and 20 others were hurt after police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells as violence flared up in Horkoli Thakurpara village of Rangpur over an alleged Facebook post 'demeaning Islam' in Rangpur in 2017.
At least 30 Hindu houses were burned and vandalized as religious zealots ran riot in the village in the afternoon and staged demonstrations blocking Dinajpur-Rangpur highway in Rangpur in 2017.
Law enforcers took action triggering a clash that left seven policemen, among others, injured.
Titu Chandra Roy, son of late Khogen Roy of the village, 'made the Facebook post' on November 5. Alamgir Hossain, a trader from nearby Lalchandrapur village, under the district's Gangachara Upazila, filed a case against Titu the same day.
