Ex-MP Noor Afroze Jyoti jailed for 7 years in graft case

BNP's former member of parliament Noor Afroze Begum Jyoti has been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in a corruption case filed against her on charge of accumulating wealth beyond her income.

At the same time, the court fined her Tk 50,000 and ordered to confiscate her property.

Judge Emran Hossain Chowdhury of Bogura Special Judge Court, delivered the verdict at about 4:30pm on Thursday (May 19).

Following the pronouncement of the judgement, BNP's former MP Noor Afroze Begum Jyoti was taken to jail.

The case statement reveals that former MP Noor Afroze Begum Jyoti is the wife of Professor Abdur Rouf of Katnarpara in Bogura town. She got involved in BNP politics when she was a student. She served as Bogura district Mohila Dal president for a long time. Then she served as assistant organising secretary of Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal and adviser of Bogura district BNP. Jyoti was MP of a reserved seat of women in Jatiya Sangsad from 2001-2006. On February 3, 2013, she submitted the details of her movable and immovable property to the ACC's coordinated office in Bogura.

In her statement, she mentioned false information of earning wealth worth over Tk 28 lakh 17 thousand. The ACC also found information that the former BNP MP had been enjoying the property worth Tk 53,22,790 earning through dishonest ways which did not match her known and known earnings.

Later, on December 15, 2014, Faruque Hossain, an official of the then ACC's district office, filed a case with Bogura Sadar Police Station. After inquiry, the official submitted chargesheer at a Bogura court on November 22, 2016.

ACC's lawyer SM Abul Kalam Azad said the anti-graft body had filed a case against the BNP's former MP Jyoti. The trial of the case began in 2017. The arguments in the hearing of the case were placed on May 11. Later, May 19 was fixed to deliver judgement in the case.
