Lack of renovation puts Bhatpara Neelkuthi on verge of ruination

MEHERPUR, Oct 14: In absence of renovation works,    Bhatpara Neelkuthi (indigo cottage) under Gangnu upazila of the district is now on the verge of ruination.
Besides, at least 10 acres of land of the indigo house have been grabbed by local influential including bricks and stones of the buildings thanks to the negligence of the authorities concerned, it is alleged.
Local land office claimed that the lands of Bhatpara indigo house were allocated to the Forest Department.  
When contacted, officials of the forest department said they do not know anything in this regard.
 It has been learnt that one Carrol Bloom, British national had established the indigo house here in 1778 alongside the River Kazla on 23 acres of land.
Recreation hall and bed rooms of the indigo cottage became dilapidated and other establishments like prison cell, stable, death cell are nearly vanished.
With the collaboration of influential, locals broke the precious marble stones of the building in expecting hidden treasure and destroyed the valuable fruit bearings trees, sources alleged.
Some plots have been used to make the barrack houses for the poor people. Gradually the lands are being grabbed by the influential and they started cultivation, sources informed.
Local assistant land officer (Tahsildar) has taken any measures to recover the grabbed lands in spite of knowing everything in this connection, local people opined.
While visiting the place, it was found that the influential people erected houses and started cultivation on the indigo house's lands.  
Shariful Islam, Ali Hayder, Ohab Ali, Rafiqul Islam, Zillur Rahman, Nurul Islam, Mohibul Islam, Ayub Ali, Khokon, Sayful, Tahaj, Bablu, Lal Chand of village Bhatpara under the upazila have been cultivating the lands illegally. While asked they said, "We are cultivating the government lands lying in vacant for long".
Abdur Rahim, assistant land officer, Shaharbati Union parishad said that the lands of Bhatpara Neelkuthi had been allocated to the Forest Department for forestation."
Gangni Upazila Forest Officer Rafiqul Islam Khan said that he knew nothing in this regard; even he did not know the location of the kuthi.  
Bhatpara Neelkuthi, the silent witness of torture during British regime, can be the beautiful tourist spot, if it is developed by repairing and renovation with proper plan, at the same time government can earn enough revenue, sources said.
Talking to the Daily Observer, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Porimal Singha, said that all lands of the ancient cottage is now under their control and they have already started works to set up a DC eco-park there.
