Culprits behind Mohanganj, Benapole express train fire yet to be identified

Law enforcers are yet to identify anyone involved in setting fire to Mohanganj Express and Benapole Express trains. Two cases filed over arson in two trains in the citys Tejgaon and Gopibagh are yet to see light.

Four including a mother and her child were killed as miscreants set Mohanganj Express train on fire on December 19. Four more were killed as Benapole Express train was set on fire in the citys Gopibagh on January 5 night.
Dhaka Railway Police (GRP) filed two separate cases over the incidents. Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Detective Branch (DB) of police are also carrying out shadow investigations of the incidents.

Apart from this, on  December 21, a senior officer of the DB said the names and identities of those involved in the arson in Mohanganj Express have been found.

Detective Branch (DB) arrested eight persons including Dhaka city south unit BNP joint convener Nabi Ullah Nabi and five Jubo Dal activists, for their suspected involvement in setting fire to the Benapole Express train, leaving four passengers dead on January 5.

The arrested are Dhaka South City BNP Joint Convener Mohammad Nabi Ullah Nabi, Jubo Dal leader Kazi Mansoor Alam, Jubo Dal workers Md Iqbal Hossain Swapan, Md Russell, Delwar Hakim Biplab, Md Salauddin, Md Kabir and Md Hasan Ahmed.

DB has interrogated them on suspicion of their involvement with the arson attack on the train and sent them to jail after remand in the case. During the remand, they informed police that a virtual meeting on Whatsapp was conducted on January 4  on planning the sabotage.

In the virtual meeting, BNP leaders also mentioned that pictures and videos of those arson attacks and vandalism will have to be sent to the upper tier of the party.

A Jubo Dal leader took the responsibility of setting fire on a train. The information the BNP leaders provided during the remand are being assessed. Police will arrest the Jubo Dal leader if the information is found to be true after verification.

Besides, the DB and other law enforcement agencies have been continuing operation to arrest the culprits.

RAB-1 on December 21 announced the arrest of 9 people as suspects in the Mohanganj Express train fire incident.

 However, they were released after interrogation as RAB said their involvement was not found.

Supervising Officer of investigation and Superintendent of Dhaka district railway police Md Anowar Hossain said none could be identified over fire in Mohanganj Express. It was seen on CCTV footage that the train caught fire, but no footage was found on who set the train on fire.

RAB-3 said it learnt the names of four people involved in setting the train afire. In a press conference at Kamalapur Railway Station on December 21, RAB-3 Director Lt Col Arif Mohiuddin Ahmed said two of these four are workers of the opposition political party and the other two are vagrants.

A high official of police HQ told The Daily Observer that no one directly involved with the arson incidents in the two trains has been identified. Efforts are on to identify the arsonists after analysing the newly obtained footage.
