Dhaka University Central Student Union (DUCSU)'s former social service secretary Akhter Hossain was arrested by police when he went to the Dhaka University campus on Wednesday.
He was arrested from Dhaka University's TSC area at about 3:00pm on Wednesday (July 17).
Police said Akhter Hossain went to the campus to take part in a gayebana namaj-e-janaza organized in memory of six people who were killed across the country on Tuesday (July 16). At that time police asked him to leave campus. Instead of leaving the campus, he lied down on the road. Then police dragged him to their vehicle.
When journalists were approaching Akhter to get his comments, police suddenly charged five sound grenades one after another, injuring several journalists on the spot. Then they were sent to the Dhaka Medical; College Hospital for treatment.
When all the protesters got dispersed after charging of sound grenades, police dragged Akhter Hossain to their covered van kept at Suhrawardy's gate adjacent to Raju Sculpture. Then police charged another sound grenade near Rokeya Hall.
Journalists have alleged that police charged sound grenades on them when they approached Akhter to get his comments. Two journalists were injured in the explosion. One of them was hurriedly rushed to the DMCH, and his name could not be known. The other was Channel SA TV's staff reporter Solaiman Kabir.
