Shanto defends Shakib after Chennai Test struggles

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto firmly backed Shakib Al Hasan following his underwhelming performance in the first Test against India in Chennai. 

When asked about carrying an out-of-form Shakib in the team, Shanto responded with confidence, emphasizing the senior player's commitment to the team despite the challenges he has faced.

"That's a brave question, Masha Allah!" Shanto quipped when asked whether Shakib's form was a concern for the team. He went on to highlight that Shakib's work ethic and intentions toward the team were more important than individual performances.

Shakib's performance in the first Test, where he failed to take any wickets and scored just 32 and 25 with the bat, raised concerns, particularly as he appeared far from his usual dominant self. The veteran all-rounder also made headlines for chewing on his helmet strap while batting, and speculation over his fitness, including a lingering finger injury, continued to swirl.

However, Shanto was quick to downplay the concerns, explaining that Shakib’s introduction into the bowling attack was delayed by strategic decisions rather than injury concerns. "I didn't really need him in the first innings, seeing how the three pace bowlers were doing. Miraz too was bowling well. It was my plan to keep the fast bowlers on for longer," he said, defending his decision to bring Shakib in after 50 overs.

Regarding Shakib’s fitness, Shanto acknowledged that the veteran was still recovering from a finger injury but avoided delving into personal criticisms. "His finger was taped. He was bleeding from his finger from the last time he was hit there," he explained.

Shanto also dismissed the notion that Bangladesh's struggles with the SG ball were an excuse for their performance, stating, "I don't think the ball was a big issue. There's obviously a difference between Kookaburra and SG balls, but the players adjusted to it. We can't say that we played poorly because of the type of ball."

Instead, he pointed to Bangladesh’s failure to capitalize on key moments, especially in the first innings, where they were bowled out for just 149. "We didn't bat well in the first innings. It was a very important phase of the game. We could have been in a better position if we had at least one top-order partnership," he said.

Shanto remains optimistic, citing the 62-run opening partnership as a positive sign heading into the next Test. "It is important to spend time on the wicket. But it wasn't enough. Still, it will help for the second Test."

In conclusion, Shanto reaffirmed his belief in Shakib and the rest of the team, stressing that collective responsibility is key to success in the upcoming matches.
