England emerged victorious in a nail-biting clash against South Africa in Sharjah, with Nat Sciver-Brunt delivering a spectacular performance that secured a seven-wicket win and took England one step closer to the semi-finals.

The match was reminiscent of the 2023 World Cup semi-final, but this time England turned the tables on South Africa, who had previously stunned them 18 months ago. The tension was palpable at Sharjah, where slightly cooler conditions made for a more favorable batting environment.

South Africa posted a total of 124, the highest score at the ground so far, but they could have managed more if not for an exceptional bowling effort from Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn. The pair combined to take three wickets while conceding just 33 runs in their eight overs. Ecclestone was particularly impressive, clean bowling Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp and completing her four-over spell without conceding a boundary.

At the halfway point, the game was evenly poised, but South Africa gained the upper hand with an inspired spell from Marizanne Kapp. She began with a maiden over and finished her first three overs with figures of 1-5. She should have dismissed Alice Capsey in her third ball, but Anneke Bosch dropped a simple catch at point—a mistake that would prove costly.

England struggled in the early stages, reaching just 16 runs after five overs. However, a boost came in the sixth over when Chloe Tryon’s left-arm spin went for 12 runs, breaking the shackles for England. Danni Wyatt-Hodge played a supporting role for the second consecutive match, with Nat Sciver-Brunt stepping up to deliver a match-winning knock.

Sciver-Brunt arrived at the crease needing 75 runs from 11 overs, and her six-ball showdown with Kapp became the defining moment of the game. With the required run rate above seven, Kapp returned in the 14th over to bowl at Sciver-Brunt. The first two balls yielded two runs, but Kapp missed her length twice in the next four balls, allowing Sciver-Brunt to smash both to the legside boundary. With that, South Africa’s greatest threat was neutralized, and England moved closer to victory.

Wyatt-Hodge departed with 11 runs needed off 12 balls, but Sciver-Brunt's calm demeanor ensured there would be no late drama. With four runs required off the final six balls, Sciver-Brunt launched the second delivery over cover for a boundary, sealing the win for England.

The victory leaves England with one foot in the semi-finals, and they have Sciver-Brunt's heroics to thank for it.
