Bangladesh's newly appointed head coach Phil Simmons has vowed to protect his players from external distractions as the team gears up for their crucial Test series against South Africa, part of the ICC World Test Championship.
Simmons emphasized the importance of keeping the players focused on cricket amid the recent controversy involving star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.
Shakib, initially selected for his final Test match against South Africa, later withdrew due to security concerns stemming from protests over his affiliation with the ousted Awami League government. Hasan Murad replaced Shakib, a former lawmaker, but the issue has stirred unrest in the cricketing environment.
"The key focus for us in the coming days is to make sure the players' attention remains on cricket, not the external noise, Simmons said, addressing the teams preparation. We can control how we prepare for Mondays Test, and that's the mindset we're instilling in the team."
Despite the turmoil surrounding the situation, Simmons expressed satisfaction with the team's recent hard work in training. "My philosophy is simple: work hard in preparation, and the results will come during the match. Over the last couple of days, Ive seen the players putting in a lot of effort into their skills and fitness, and Im pleased with what Ive observed."
When asked about the challenges of leading Bangladesh amid heightened scrutiny, Simmons acknowledged the pressure but remained undeterred. "All international coaching roles are tough, and Bangladesh is no different. But for me, it's about getting the players to focus, enjoy their cricket, and win matches. I don't feel like the seat is too hot. The last few days have been really positive," he remarked.
Looking ahead, Simmons said his priority is to prepare the team for Mondays opening Test and to approach each game with a winning mentality. "It's all about preparation and aiming to win games. Thats the mindset were adopting," he added.
