Dr. Abdur Razzak, former Agriculture Minister and a presidium member of Awami League, has been remanded for 15 days in connection with three separate cases, including two murder cases in Tangail.
The court granted five days of remand for each case, totaling 15 days, on Monday afternoon.
The former minister was brought to the court under tight security from the district jail at around 3:30 PM.
Meanwhile, members of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and the Gono Odhikar Parishad protested, demanding Razzak's trial, throwing eggs at him during the demonstration.
Court sources reported that Razzak was first presented at Madhupur Magistrate Court, where police sought a seven-day remand for his alleged involvement in an attack on a student-led protest against discrimination on August 4. The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mahmudul Mohsin, approved a five-day remand.
The Anti-Discrimination Movement attack left several people injured, prompting a lawsuit filed by Zahid Hasan on September 25, naming Abdur Razzak as the main accused. The court instructed the Madhupur police to investigate the case.
Razzak was also presented at Tangail Sadar Magistrate Court concerning the murder of school student Maruf, who was shot during a rally on August 5 in Tangail. Senior Judicial Magistrate Poshupati Biswas granted a five-day remand after police requested seven days for questioning. Marufs mother, Morsheda, had filed a case naming Razzak as the main accused.
Finally, Razzak appeared at Mirzapur Magistrate Court for the murder case of college student Imon, who succumbed to gunshot wounds after being injured during a protest on August 4 in Gorai. Judicial Magistrate Ismat Ara approved a five-day remand in this case as well. Imon's brother Suman had filed a case on August 19, making Razzak the primary accused.
During the court hearings, Abdur Razzak's legal defense, led by District Bar President AKM Shamimul Akhtar and a team of 25 lawyers, appealed for bail.
However, newly appointed Public Prosecutor Shafiqul Islam Ripon, alongside over 50 other lawyers, opposed the bail.
From early morning, groups from BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and the Gono Odhikar Parishad gathered near the court premises, staging rallies and blocking access points. When Razzak was brought to court at 3:20 PM, protesters surrounded the prison van, chanting slogans and throwing eggs. Demonstrations continued even after he was taken back into custody.
Tangail Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Tanvir Ahmed stated that Razzak would be interrogated for five days concerning the student murder case. He was returned to the police station following the court proceedings.
