West Indies defeated Bangladesh by 201 runs in the opening Test of the two-match series at North Sound, Antigua, despite a spirited individual performance from Taskin Ahmed.
Bangladesh's pursuit of 334 runs in the fourth innings ended in disappointment as they were bowled out for just 132, handing the hosts a comfortable victory.
Taskin Ahmed starred with the ball, claiming a six-wicket haul in the West Indies' second innings, but his efforts were not enough to prevent Bangladesh from falling short. Justin Greaves was the standout player of the match, scoring an unbeaten 115 in the first innings and contributing with two crucial wickets, earning him the Player of the Match award.
In his post-match comments, Bangladeshs stand-in captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz acknowledged his teams shortcomings, particularly with the bat. "We bowled really well. Taskin got six wickets, but they had a good partnership after being seven wickets down. That was when we lost control of the match," Miraz said. Reflecting on the batting collapse, he added, "We didn't bat well in this match. We made some mistakes, but that can happen. We hope to come back strongly in the next match, knowing what we need to improve."
West Indies set a commanding total in their first innings, declaring at 450/9. Mikyle Louis (97) and Alick Athanaze (90) provided strong support to Greaves century. Bangladesh responded with 269/9 declared, with Jaker Ali contributing a valuable 53.
In the second innings, Taskins fiery spell (6/64) gave Bangladesh a glimmer of hope, as the West Indies were restricted to 152. However, Bangladeshs batting faltered again, with only captain Miraz (45) and Jaker Ali (31) showing any resilience under pressure.
Despite the defeat, Miraz praised his bowlers, especially Taskin, Hasan Mahmud, and Nahid Rana. "We have a good pace attack with Taskin, Hasan, and Nahid. Taijul also bowled really well in the first innings. I am really happy with their performance," he stated.
Looking ahead to the second Test, Miraz expressed optimism, saying, "We will have a chat among ourselves and come back stronger." With one match remaining in the series, Bangladesh will focus on addressing their batting inconsistencies and aim to level the series.
